A specialist in disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nerves is called a neurologist (neuromedicine specialist). Many people are unsure which problems need a neurologist, and patients from northern Bangladesh or districts around Dhaka often travel long distances to the capital to see one.
When to see a neurologist
- Treatment after a stroke and prevention of another
- Frequent or severe headache, migraine
- Seizures or blackouts
- Tingling, burning, numbness or weakness in the hands or feet
- Tremor or slowness of movement
- Dizziness and poor balance
- Memory loss or behaviour change
- Facial droop or drooping eyelids
- Pain radiating from the back or neck into the limbs
Neurologist or neurosurgeon?
A neurologist treats with medicines and non-surgical care — which is how most nerve disorders are managed. A neurosurgeon operates on the brain and spine. Seeing a neurologist first is usually right; if surgery is needed, you will be referred.
What to bring to your first visit
- All previous prescriptions and discharge summaries
- MRI/CT films and reports, EEG, NCS and blood reports
- All current medicines or their empty strips
- A phone video of any seizure or tremor episode
- A companion who knows the patient's history
